Not the defending champion and favorite Dieter Müller but Hans-Jürgen Kühl, who played for Altenessen, became the new German three-cushion champion in Duisburg-Walsum. He won the final with 50:49 in 65 shots. Müller was already in the lead 49:44 and Kühl finished the game with a series of six points. Müller had no follow-up. Another surprise came from Peter Bauer from Reutlingen, who took third place.

The games were played in the qualification groups with up to 50 points or 60 shots. The two best in the group and the best third in the group qualified for the final round.
