Wolfgang Zenkner (* 31 March 1954 in Germaringen , Allgaeu ) is a German Karambolagespieler and world champion in the cover .

Private

The beginning of Zenkner's billiards career goes back to the 1960s when he and his older brother received a little table billiards from their father for Christmas. Around 1968, at the age of 14, he had finally committed himself to a career as a professional billiard athlete. Due to better playing and training opportunities, he moved to BSV Munich in 1972 . He currently plays for BC Munich in the 2nd three-cushion Bundesliga. From 2007 to 2013 he also played billiards for the multiple German all-around team champion Weitmar.

Born in Germaring, he is a senior teacher for sport, mathematics and geography at the Jakob-Brucker-Gymnasium in Kaufbeuren . He also lives there with his wife and their children. A career as a professional billiard was never an option for him. Zenkner ironically commented on his attitude with the words:

"As a pool player, I am simply too weak to support a family with three children in this way, so I prefer to remain a civil servant, at least it's worth it."

But when he takes part in tournaments he is always one of the best. When asked why he chose billiards as a fringe sport, he replied:

"Probably because I'm stupid."

During his successful career, Zenkner caused a sensation by acting much more impulsively and extroverted than his fellow players, which seems to be contrary to his preference for soft pop music.

Since the 1990s, things have calmed down a bit about himself. This is not due to the fact that he no longer feels like playing, but that the family man Zenkner takes precedence over private matters and for him billiards remains the "most beautiful minor matter in the world".

Career

In 1978, actually quite late for a professional player, the 24-year-old from Munich made it onto the international stage of the carom. Three years later, in 1981, he was able to fight for the first German championship title in his favorite discipline, the binding. In the following year (1982) he became a member of the German national team with which, to the surprise of the international professional world, he became vice world champion in 1983 at the binding world championships in Rucphen , the Netherlands . In the following year, Zenkner was rewarded with victory at the European team championship in Amersfoort, the Netherlands in the pentathlon, his career highlight until then. His first international individual titles won in 1986 the Allgäu in the Austrian Baden in Vienna at the Cadre-47/1 European Championships .

Since he was part of the regular line-up of the German national team from the start, it was all the better for him that the team won the silver medal at the team world championship in the three-way battle at the premiere in 1989 in Essen . After finishing fourth in 1990, Zenkner was finally able to win the first gold medal in Essen in 1991. Then he withdrew from the national team because the time required to prepare and participate in major championships was too high for him. He also carefully plans the remaining tournaments he plays. His other successes include several German championships and top placements in international tournaments. On November 29th, 2008 he was defeated by the Belgian Frédéric Caudron in the final of the European Championships with 35: 150 and became vice European champion. Just over two months later, on May 3, 2009, he beat the Dutch defending champion Jean Paul de Bruijn 150-78 in the final of the single -binding World Cup in Cervera , Spain , and won his first individual title.

Current

After the early elimination in the group phase of the 2013 European Championships in Brandenburg an der Havel , Zenkner gave in several interviews. a. announced with the billiard newspaper Touch that he would withdraw from the international stage and from the 1st all-around Bundesliga. As a justification, he gave the enormous training effort that he only had to do to maintain his current playing strength. He is currently playing with Marco Zanetti for BC Munich in the 2nd three-cushion Bundesliga.
