The German Grand Prix (GGP) is a German tournament series in three-cushion carom in which only German players can participate. It serves, among other things, for entitlement to participate in the German Championships (DDM). In July 2012 the Grand Prix was suspended for financial reasons. After multiple demands from the players, the German Billard Union (DBU) announced that it would initially revive the GGP with three tournaments from May 2018.

history

The GGP has been held since the 1989/90 season. Between three (1999) and nine (1992) tournaments were played annually. The Grand Prix season began after the German Three Cushion Championship (DDM) and ended four weeks before the next championship, which has been taking place in autumn since 2003. After the last tournament of the season, the overall winner of the Grand Prix will be determined (from the GGP ranking list without DDM). The players who could not qualify for the DDM via the state championship, this was a motivation to take part in the GGP and to qualify for the DDM afterwards. For GGP qualification, a player must have participated in at least 50% of the tournaments. The venues are the club houses of the organizers. At times over a hundred players took part in a tournament series.

The 2018 season provided for a qualifying tournament for the DM. This should take place in Witten . The 3-part GGP replaced this qualification.

The Grand Prix ranking list

During a GGP season, the current GGP ranking was of decisive importance for the entry and seeding list for the next GP tournament. In the ranking list, the oldest result from the previous season becomes the deleted result. So z. B. at the first tournament of the current season the result of the first GGP of the previous season is removed from the rating. If fewer GGPs are held in the current season than in the previous season, after the first GGP of the new season, more GGPs from the previous season will be excluded from the rating. If more tournaments are played in the current season than in the previous season - e.g. B. seven instead of six in the preseason - the seventh GGP is included in the rating without being offset by a deletion result from the preseason.

mode

To 2012

The tournament was divided into two phases. The first was the group phase (qualifying round) in which the game was played in round robin mode, the two best in the group made it to the final round. There they played in knock-out mode.

14 days before the start of the tournament, the order of the entry list (according to GGP points) determined which 16 players could participate in the main tournament without qualification. The other 16 participants in the main round were determined in the qualification on the first day of the tournament (Friday).

Initially, the main round was played as set games, in the final "Best of 5" with 15 points. From 2005 a one-set final was played, the winner received 2 match points (MP). In the preliminary round the game was played on 25 points or 25 admissions, in the final round on 25 points with no admission limit.

Since 2018

The rules were adapted to restart the GGP.

  • The organizer must have at least four billiards with an approved cloth.
  • To cover the costs of the organizer, each participant has to pay an entry fee of € 25.
  • The number of players has been increased from 16 to a maximum of 24.
  • In the preliminary round the game is played in groups of three (groups A – H).
  • Game distances:
  • Shot clock : 40 seconds with 2 time-outs per player and game
  • Places 1–3 of the GGP ranking list after the last tournament will receive a starting place for the DM, provided they have participated in at least 50% of the tournaments.
  • On request, the overall winner will receive a report on the DBU's entry list for one of the following three-cushion World Cups .
