The ATSV 1898 Erlangen e. V. was founded in 1898 as a workers gymnastics club. At first there was only one gymnastics department, other departments were added later.

history

After it was founded in Erlangen in 1898 , the club expanded to include a football department in 1913. In 1920 he acquired a club's own gym and playground at Röthelheim. With the merger of the workers' old people's club and the Edelweiß tourist club, it was now called the Erlangen gymnastics and sports club. In 1933 the association was banned and the association's facilities and property were confiscated by the National Socialists. In 1949, the reconstruction began with the merger with the former workers' swimming club and the post and railway sports club. Now it has received its name General Gymnastics and Sports Club 1898 Erlangen to this day. A judo department was established in 1949. At the end of the 1950s, the construction of a new sports facility with a clubhouse on Paul-Gossen-Strasse began. Since a bowling alley with four lanes was also built, the bowling department was founded. Gradually, other departments such as the table tennis department (1967) were added. For the new canoe department (1975) the association built its own canoe home on the Regnitz. The tennis department was also created with the construction of four tennis courts on the club's premises. The billiards department joined the club in 1979 and has been playing in its own rooms in the sports home since 2001. Badminton (1992) and most recently kickboxing, iaido, kendo and wrestling were newly founded. Today the association with over 1500 members is one of the major associations in Erlangen.
