The TSV 1861 Nördlingen is a German multi-utility club from the Bavarian-Swabian town of Nördlingen . It was originally founded in 1861 as TV Nördlingen . Since the merger with the football club VfR Nördlingen in 1938, it has had its current name. The most important athlete from the ranks of the club is the former German soccer player Gerd Müller , who already proved his scoring potential at TSV (180 goals in the 1962/63 season alone). With FC Bayern Munich , to which he moved in the summer of 1964, Müller won numerous national and international titles and became the historic top scorer in the Bundesliga. In addition, he was both world (1974) and European (1972) champion.
The club became known nationwide for its basketball department. The first men's team, Giants Nördlingen Basketball AG , which was spun off from the main club and converted into a stock corporation, played in the basketball Bundesliga (BBL) in the 2008/2009 season and is currently represented in the Regionalliga-Südost. The former women's team plays first class as BG Donau-Ries . Both teams play their home games in the Hermann-Keßler-Halle in the Rieser Sportpark, which can hold 2,000 spectators.
The club's soccer team plays in the stadium in the Rieser Sportpark, which was renamed the Gerd Müller Stadium after Gerd Müller in the summer of 2008 . It holds about 10,000 spectators.
