The men's basketball team of TSV 1861 Nördlingen from Nördlingen ( Bavaria ) has been playing in the 2nd regional league since 2017.
In the 2008/09 game year, the team started under the name Giants Nördlingen in the basketball league . It did this at the time as part of an operating company that acted legally independently of the TSV.
history
In the 2007/2008 season, TSV 1861 Nördlingen, under the direction of coach Andreas Wagner, won the championship in the 2. Bundesliga ProA and thus rose to the basketball Bundesliga . In spring 2008 the Giants Nördlingen Basketball AG was founded as the operating company of the team.
Despite the sporting non-relegation in the Bundesliga and the license granted for the time being, the club announced on May 31, 2009 that it was withdrawing from the BBL and returning to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA due to the insufficient number of sponsors and the associated financial difficulties .
At the end of the 2009/2010 season the club took 16th place in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA, which meant relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB . However, the club decided not to compete in the ProB at the beginning of the 2010/11 season, but to start over in the 1st Regionalliga Süd-Ost. A newly formed team was able to win the championship surprisingly and thus lead the Giants back to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB for the 2011/2012 season . Both 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 the Giants were able to move into the play-offs there, but were eliminated before the final and the associated promotion to the ProA . In July 2012 the team name was changed from Giants Nördlingen to Giants TSV 1861 Nördlingen.
In the 2013/14 season they had to accept relegation from the ProB and returned as champions of the 1st Regionalliga Süd-Ost 2015 in the third-highest German division. As a (re) climber, the playoff semi-finals were reached in 2015/16. After the end of the 2015/16 season, head coach Mario Matic left the team after six years, his successor was the Irishman Daniel Nelson. The team missed relegation in the ProB in the 2016/17 season and was relegated to the first regional league. However, they waived the starting place and decided to compete in the second regional league as TSV 1861 Nördlingen in the 2017/18 season. The men's team was reintegrated into the main club, the Hungarian coach Gergely Szabo was to manage the rebuilding. During the summer break of 2019, the long-standing sporting director and team coordinator Walter “Leo” Emmert, a “veteran” who had already worked for the team during the Bundesliga days, withdrew. With the 30-year-old Sebastian Moll, one of the club's own generation took over as coach. The plan was drawn up to aim for a "return to the attractive regional seasons" with a team consisting primarily of local players.
Home ground
The first team plays its home games in the Hermann-Kessler-Halle in the Rieser Sportpark, which can hold 3,000 spectators.
