Ángel Sagaz Zubelzu

Ángel Sagaz Zubelzu (born March 1, 1913 in Madrid , † May 6, 1974 in Jaén ) was a Spanish diplomat .

Life

Ángel Sagaz Zubelzu was the son of Francisca Zubelzu and Luis Sagaz, a lawyer . He married Ursula Zinsel Steeger in 1957 († October 3, 2012). He studied law , entered the foreign service and in 1945 became secretary of the legation in Helsinki . From 1966 to February 4, 1972, he was ambassador to Cairo and was accredited to the governments of Karthum and Mogadishu . The membership of the Jewish community in Egypt decreased from about 80,000 in 1948 to about 2,500 in 1967, of which Gamal Abdel Nasser imprisoned about 425. After the Six Day War , Francisco Franco was asked to help free Jews from Egyptian captivity at Abu Zaabal , and Ángel Sagaz Zubelzu distributed around 1,500 Spanish passports .

From March 7, 1972 to May 6, 1974, he headed the Spanish diplomatic mission in Washington, DC and was involved in the negotiations on a treaty sanctioning the US air force bases in Spain .
