history

Until the 19th century

Mitterteich was first mentioned in 1185 with the name "You" in a papal protective bull. The village came into the possession of the Waldsassen monastery in 1277 . In 1501, Mitterteich received market rights as the re-establishment of the monastery on the road from Nuremberg to Eger ( Cheb ) . These were extended on August 12, 1516 to include the rights to serve beer and hold weekly markets . At the same time, Abbot Andreas Metzel awarded the coat of arms that is still used today (with interruption) . In addition, the Mitterteicher got the right to exercise the lower jurisdiction. In 1565 a Lutheran parish was established in Mitterteich. The economic importance of the market continued to grow as a result of new market freedoms since 1568. It was allowed to hold cattle markets and trade in salt. In the Thirty Years' War which was market town almost completely destroyed. A Catholic parish was established in 1665. With the commissioning of the Mitterteich - Eger and Schwandorf - Mitterteich railway lines in 1864 and 1865, the industrial age began in Mitterteich as well. In 1882 a glassworks opened and began producing mirror and plate glass . In 1886, Ludwig Lindner founded the first porcelain factory (later Porzellanfabrik Mitterteich AG), which was followed in 1899 by the Julius Rother porcelain factory.

Mitterteich has been a city since 1932 . In 1951 a boys' school was built, and in 1955 a private grammar school for boys was founded in the neighboring Fockenfeld monastery . In 1977 the Mitterteich interim storage facility was built, in which, among other things, contaminated steel parts from the Gundremmingen nuclear power plant near Günzburg are temporarily stored. In 1988 extensive urban redevelopment was started to beautify the cityscape.
