Herbert Molwitz (born January 11, 1901 in Blankenhain , † April 30, 1970 in Tirschenreuth ) was a German engraver and etcher .

In his works, the artist mainly dealt with motifs from his adopted home Upper Palatinate . Depictions of plants, especially trees, grasses, flowers and so-called weeds, for the detailed depiction of which he became famous, as well as local and landscape panoramas had particularly impressed him. Herbert Molwitz is buried in Mitterteich , where he lived from 1913 to 1957.

biography

Molwitz came to Mitterteich with his parents at the age of twelve; his father was employed there as director of the porcelain factory. Herbert Molwitz also worked in the porcelain factory, completed an internship there and then studied chemistry in Würzburg and Munich. Molwitz soon discovered his artistic talent, the first drawings date from 1924 to 1925. During this time, there were two study trips that took Herbert Molwitz first to Switzerland and then to Italy, first to Tuscany , then to Florence and finally to Rome . From Rome, Molwitz moved over the Sabine Mountains to the artists' colony Anticoli Corrado , where he discovered the technique of engraving under the influence of the painter Edward Bruce . After his stay in Italy, Molwitz decided to devote himself entirely to art. So he began studying with Professor Alexander Olbricht at the University of Fine Arts in Weimar , which he soon gave up because they did not meet his expectations. For Molwitz, the archive of the Weimar art collector Alfred Bogenhard was more valuable, as it offered him a wealth of illustrative and study material. During this time Molwitz discovered the art of the late Middle Ages as a model for his work. Further study trips to Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and Italy followed. In 1932 Molwitz created the topography of the Upper Palatinate with over 100 etchings and drawings of buildings and characteristic places of his homeland, to which he felt very attached. During the time of National Socialism he was continuously represented from 1937 to 1944 participant in the Great German Art Exhibition in the House of German Art in Munich.
