Kommunbrauhaus is the name for a brewery established by the community . These breweries often date from the 14th to the 16th century and made it possible for the citizens to brew their beer there. The prerequisite for brewing rights were often civil rights and their own house or property . Communal breweries can often be found in the Upper Palatinate and Franconia .

Many Kommunbrauhäuser are still in operation and can by the citizens in the land register a brewing rights have entered, often for a fee for use of the building or for the master brewer , which monitors the brewing process and for reporting to the Principal Customs Office (see also Beer tax ) is responsible. Many municipalities also allow citizens who do not have an entry in the land register to brew in the communal brewery. The further processing of the beer then takes place at home in one's own responsibility.
