The Verhoeven Open Tournament 2018 was a carom tournament in the three cushion discipline and took place from July 23 to 29 in Flushing, a district of New York , USA .

mode

As usual, the tournament was held in three stages and played without a push .

1. Qualifying round: 98 players in 14 groups of 7 players each, in which 25 points were played.
2. The semi-final group round: 4 groups of 10 players. Playing distance: 40 points.
3. The knockout round with the last 8 players, also at a game distance of 40 points.

Placement games were played for places 5 + 6.

Tournament commentary

The tournament started for the first time with a "technical breakdown". The Kozoom team, responsible for the live broadcasts, had difficulties at Charles-De-Gaulle Airport in Paris and arrived late in New York, so broadcasts could not start until Tuesday, one day late.

The Korean defending champion Cho Jae-ho did not run. The agreement between the UMB and the KBF came too late for Cho to get a visa for the USA. Germany was represented with seven players, of which Martin Horn was given the greatest chance of a podium place. The German national coach Wolfgang Zenkner was there for the first time. Austria was represented by three players, the top players Andreas Efler , Arnim Kahofer and Gerhard Kostistanski were not there. For the first time, an Australian player, Ivan Jekov, was there, a country that has been shaped more by the British for snooker , even if its predecessor, English Billiards, is closer to the idea of ​​carom. Israel was also there for the first time and was represented by Zion Xvi. The same applies to Vass Vassi, who lives in the USA and competed for his home country Bulgaria.

A total of 484 games were played.

Preliminary round

The two best group members came into the main round. In addition to the 30 best in the group, there are the two best group thirds, the five seeded players and three further players are determined via an auction and lottery. From these 40 players, four groups with 10 players were formed. These groups are also played in the round robin system. The first two of each group qualify for the knockout round of the last 8. In the event of a tie, placement in the group was not determined by the GD, but by the point ratio.
