Tournament commentary
For the third time, the three- band tournament was held in honor of the late Sang Chun Lee . The native Korean had won the Korean three-cushion championship ten times in a row between 1978 and 1987. After emigrating to the United States, he won the US three-cushion championships twelve times between 1990 and 2001. He celebrated 41 victories in a row and was able to improve the record of the legendary Willie Hoppe , who brought it to 36 victories. He was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame on May 15, 2007 in the presence of his widow by the Billiards Congress of America as the 51st member since its inception in 1966. After Raymond Ceulemans , the only one still alive and active, he is only the sixth carom player to receive this honor.
The tournament started again with a large field of participants from many countries. After a total of 252 qualifying games, 30 players qualified for the semi-finals. Here the field was filled to 40 through seeded players and a lottery system. The final round reached 20 players in a final round A and B. The winner of 2005 Torbjörn Blomdahl surprisingly only made it into the final round B where it was about places 11 to 20. Like last year, the final round A was won by Frédéric Caudron , who suffered only one defeat against Daniel Sánchez . Sánchez finished second. Third place was very hard fought. Three players could win five games. In the end, Semih Saygıner secured this place thanks to the best average.
