The Jennifer Shim International 2017 for women was a carom tournament in the three cushion discipline and took place from August 4th to 6th in New York , USA . Following this tournament, the annual Verhoeven Open traditionally took place, to which women were also allowed.

history

In 2013, the tournament was organized for the first time as an independent tournament for women. However, the beginnings go back to 2005. Back then, the widow of the top American player of Korean origin, Sang Chun Lee , hosted the Sang Lee International Open in his honor . This tournament was only played until 2008, but saw its rebirth in 2012 under the name Verhoeven Open Tournament . In 2015, the women's tournament was renamed Jennifer Shim International .

mode

The game was played in four preliminary round groups of 7 players each, in which all players had to compete against each other ( round robin mode ). In the group stage, the game was played on 25 points or 55 shots without a kick-off after a win. If the game ends with less than 25 points, there is a follow-up. The best 2 players in each group play the winner in the knockout system. In the final round and the placement games, up to 30 points were played without a limit on the number of entries and without a kick-off. Places three to eight were played off in playoffs.

Tournament commentary

Sruong Pheavy, last year's finalist

In addition to the defending champion Therese Klompenhouwer from the Netherlands, the Dutch number 2, Karina Jetten, also took part. Six-time world champion Orie Hida and her mother Kazumi played for Japan . Jessica Caudron, wife of multiple world champion Frédéric Caudron , traveled from Belgium . Alina Shim, younger sister of the tournament namesake, was there for the first time, but could not win a game in the group stage and was eliminated. Austria was represented by Helga Mitterböck and Monika Steinberger. Germany was unable to send a player, as was Switzerland. With Esther Park, the hosts sent the country's best into the race for the gold medal. Sruong Pheavy from Cambodia, second in the last tournament, took a good third place in the group round, but did not make it to the final round. Kazumi Hida took 4th place. As in 2013, the two main competitors Hida and Klompenhouwer met each other in the final. The Dutch woman was able to prevail again and win the tournament for the third time in a row.
