The Verhoeven Open Tournament 2014 was a carom tournament in the three cushion discipline and took place from July 15th to 20th in New York , USA .

mode

In the group stage from July 15th to the morning of July 19th, ten groups of seven players each played against each other in round robin mode . The two best in the group and the four best third-placed finishers advance to the semi-finals. There they met the two seeded players Frédéric Caudron and Torbjörn Blomdahl (No. 1 & 2 in the world rankings), as well as the honorary players Raymond Ceulemans and Dick Jaspers . In the semifinals, 30 points are played. At noon on July 19, the final round 1 began with the "last 24". In the group stage the game was played to 25 points and in the final round to 40 points. The tournament had no referees overseeing the individual games. The players have to trust each other and enter their scores themselves. Above each table there is a kind of abacus on which the player has to display the score after completing his recording. The players must also make the entries on the computer themselves. There was no shot clock . The US players ( USBA members) received ranking points.

Tournament commentary

The tournament management had changed its decision on Saturday at the beginning of the final round, not to play it as a knockout round, as in the previous year, but as a round robin (everyone against everyone).

Final round, day 1 (Sat.)

At 10:00 local time, the first round of the final and the play-offs for places 13-16 began at the same time. A surprise came on Saturday in the first half of the final in the game of defending champion from Belgium, Frédéric Caudron, against the Vietnamese Ly The Vinh. Ly had a good series of 13s and ended up winning the game 40:34. Caudron was then able to live up to his title as world champion and won the remaining three games, including one with a maximum series (HS) of 17 points. Only the Swede Torbjörn Blomdahl , winner of 2005, and ex-world champion Eddy Merckx , also from Belgium, were better . You could decide all the games for yourself. The Swede was in first place at halftime due to the better average. The surprise bronze medalist of the previous World Cup, Alexander Salazar from Colombia, could not maintain this form and lost all his games. Dick Jaspers from the Netherlands, also third in the World Cup, surprisingly lost two of his games and had to be content with fourth place at half time.

Final round, day 2 (Sun.)

Session 1

The second half of the final began on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. local time. The first session of the day promised two exciting encounters. On the one hand that of the two Belgian world champions Caudron and Merckx, which the latter won with 40:31. Caudron suffered his second defeat and it was questionable whether he would be able to defend his title. The other game, again two world champions, the so far undefeated Blomdahl and Jaspers. The latter made a series of 10 in the second shot and then pulled away from the Swede. This reflected and played his way. After a series of 5 points it was 39:32 for the man from Gothenburg. However, he missed the match point and Jaspers had a chance to win. His streak was over after three balls, however, and he had to hand the table back to Blomdahl. This transformed his second match point and won after only 16 shots 40:35. Due to the still better GD, he is still ahead of Merckx.

Session 2

The session started at 12:00. In the second session there was a duel between number one and number two in the world rankings, Caudron against Blomdahl. Here, too, the Swede showed strong nerves and won with 40:31. Caudron was relieved of his title, no more chance with two games still to play to win the title again. The second eagerly awaited game between the still unbeaten Merckx and the so far not so victorious Jaspers once again pointed to a victory for the Belgian. After the 25th recording it was 35:28 against the Dutchman. Then he made a series of nine, Merckx only one point. In the 17th shot, Jaspers had match point after two balls, which he also managed. Merckx's first defeat of the round, Blomdahl now the only player unbeaten. Vinh and Salazar both clinched their second victory.

Session 3

The last lap began at 3:00 p.m. The decision should come in the last meeting between the two leaders. If Blomdahl wins, the title is certain for him. If Merckx wins, the tournament management quickly changed the mode again, a playoff over the full distance to win the tournament. Caudron and Jaspers fight for the bronze medal. In the top game Blomdahl quickly took the lead with a series of nine. After the eleventh shot, it was 25:17 for the Swede and it went into the break. At the same time, Caudron and Jaspers also played the eleventh recording at the next table. There it was already 34:32 for the Belgian, which Jaspers immediately equalized. Both played an average of over 3. At the same time, Vinh had defeated the Colombian Cataño in 15 shots 40:18 and received his sixth match point. Caudron found his way back to his usual fighting strength and finished the match with a series of six points to 40:34. The bronze medal therefore went to him. The Egyptian Sidhom put his good playing strength through again to 40:32 in 25 shots against the Colombian Salazar. Back from the break, Merckx followed up a series of nine and overtook Blomdahl, 26:25. He countered with a series of 5, 26:30. Another point for Blomdahl, zero for Merckx. Before the Gothenburg player played, he wanted to clean the ball first. The players at this tournament have to do this themselves, as there are no referees. As with snooker, a position aid is used for this . Another two points for him and again zero for the Belgian (33: 26/14). Merckx again with a bad shot and again three balls for Blomdahl. Merckx finally succeeded in being accepted, followed by a series of three points. Blomdahl countered with two balls, the next one failed with a counterattack. Merckx was now under pressure to make eleven points to win, but the first ball failed. Blomdahl got in with a support over four boards and turned the match point to 40:29. It was his second title in New York, after 2005, when the tournament was still called " Sang Lee International Open ".

A total of 321 games were played.

Quarter final round

In the first round, the game was played on 25 points without a kick . The two best in the group, the two third best and two other players, who were determined via an auction or lottery, made it to the semi-finals. A total of 24 players made it to the semi-finals.
