The three- cushion world cup 2014/2 was the second UMB / ACC world cup tournament in the 28th year of the three-cushion world cup. It took place from March 23-29, 2014 in Luxor , Egypt . It was the first world cup tournament in the historic Egyptian tourist town of Luxor on the Nile.
For the first time a world cup tournament took place in Luxor. The Greeks canceled their World Cup due to the close schedule to the planned World Cup tournament in Greece. Insiders assumed that the Greeks, essentially the IBT Hellas, which held the 2013 tournament in Greece, only found one reason for the cancellation with the date. With the establishment of the African billiards association ACC , the mode for the final qualifying round changed. Since every continental association receives one wildcard per tournament, only the three best runners-up in the group qualify for the main tournament of the best 32.
There were no big surprises in the four qualifying rounds in Luxor. The main round started with a very exciting match between Tayfun Taşdemir and Eddy Leppens . Taşdemir was already leading 34: 5. Leppens fought his way up to 33:38. Taşdemir was able to end the game in the 21st recording. Leppens managed the seven points in the follow-up to a tie. Taşdemir started the extension with ten points. Leppens only got one point and was eliminated. The biggest surprise of the round of 16 is the victory of Jean Paul de Bruijn against his compatriot Dick Jaspers . The two world rankings, Frédéric Caudron and Torbjörn Blomdahl , contested the final . Here Caudron started with a series of 19 points, added three points in the third shot and went into the break with 22: 0 points. This lead was enough to win in 13 shots. It was Caudron's 14th World Cup victory.
A lot has changed in the tournament mode since 2013. The rate system was abolished because the match time could not be calculated. Matches could last between three and five sets. Good timing was therefore not possible. The game distances were set at 30 points in the pre-qualifying rounds and 40 points in the main qualification and in the knockout games. A tie is possible in the qualifying rounds. In the knockout round, overtime is played in the event of a tie. Each of the two players starts with the initial push. Whoever scores more points wins the match. If there is also a tie in extra time, the kick starts again until a winner is determined. The shot clock was set to 40 seconds wildcards, there are only two for the organizer and one each for the three of the four associations CPB , ACBC , CEB and ACC , in which the World Cup does not take place.
Four qualifying rounds are played. From the last qualifying round, the 12 group winners and the three best runners-up qualify for the final round. The main tournament is played with 32 participants.
In the event of a tie, the following order will be applied:
The first 12 players in the world rankings and the wildcard players automatically took part as players in the tournament in the knockout round. The first four of the world rankings are placed in positions 1, 16, 8 and 9.
For the sake of clarity, qualification rounds 1, 2 and 3 are not shown. These can be looked up under the links at the UMB . In the last (4th) qualifying round, up to 40 points are played in groups A – L with 3 players each. The top four and the four best runners-up go to the final round of the best 32. In the event of a tie, the better GD applies .
The three-cushion World Cup was organized by the founding association, the " Billiards Worldcup Association " (BWA) until 1998 . Disputes between the BWA and the world association Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) led to parallel tournaments between 1994 and 1997. The UMB / BWA organized the tournament together until the beginning of 1999. Since the dissolution of the BWA in 1999, the UMB has been the sole organizer. From 1988-1991 the UMB did not host any world championships. During this time, the annual overall winner of the World Cup was crowned world champion.
