The three- cushion world cup 2012/1 was the first UMB / CEB world cup tournament in the 26th year of the three-cushion world cup. The tournament took place from February 13th to 19th, 2012 in Antalya on the Turkish Riviera. It was the sixth World Cup tournament in Antalya.
history
With the first tournament in this series, the hunt for last year's Swedish overall winner Torbjörn Blomdahl began . With 194 (!) Participants it was the largest field of participants so far. The mode: four qualifying rounds and a final round with 32 players.
16 German players, led by Martin Horn and Christian Rudolph , took part. Only Horn made it into the final round as a seeded player thanks to his world ranking position. There he was defeated by the leading Turkish player and finalist Tayfun Taşdemir with 1: 3. He was able to shoot defending champion Blomdahl 3-2 out of the tournament in the quarter-finals.
Six of the seven German first round players (PPP qualification), namely Karl-Heinz Gertzen, Klaus Felgträger, Bernd Leue, Hakan Celik, Bajram Ibraimov and Josef Hostert, dropped out early. Only Christian Zöllner from “1. BC Magdeburg “made it to the next round (PP-Quali), in which Orhan Erogul (Group E), Thomas Kerl (Group G), Cengiz Karaca (Group T) and Michael Schlieper (Group U) entered the tournament.
On the third day all German players were eliminated, which is why the qualifying round took place without German participation. The departure of Christian Rudolph was surprising. In his first group game he lost 2-0 to Koray Karman from Turkey. The subsequent 2-1 win against Ekrim Beyaz could no longer prevent his early departure. The same fate befell Ronny Lindemann from BCC Witten. In the first group game, the young international overran Savas Gungor from Turkey with 2-0 in 7 and 6 shots and a world-class GD of 2.307. In his second game, against Sweden's David Pennör, the score at 15: 3 looked like a clear march through from his point of view. Then the thread broke and all the balls became an insoluble problem. He eventually lost the game 2-1. The highlight of the round was the Dutchman Berry van Beers in his game against the Egyptian Mummar Rahmet with a smooth GD of 3,000 in 4 and 6 shots. With two 2-0 wins and a total score of 2,142, he moved into the next round as the best player.
The most outstanding player from the Turkish and audience perspective was Tayfun Taşdemir. The "Turkish Lion" (quote: Frits Bakker) sent the last remaining German player and winner of 2009/2 , Martin Horn, 3-1 home in his first round match in the first game of the main round . Then three other world champions shared this fate: Eddy Merckx in the round of 16 , Torbjörn Blomdahl in the quarter-finals and Frédéric Caudron in the semifinals. In the final he then faced the Korean and AGIPI Masters 2011 winner Choi Sung won . After an equal game he lost his concentration in the 5th set and Tasdemir lost in the end with 2: 3 against the Asian.
Frédéric Caudron achieved the best tournament GD with 2,195. The best series (HS) of 15 was played by Spaniard Daniel Sánchez in his quarter-final against French Jérémy Bury . In the fifth and decisive set, Sánchez swept Bury off the table in just 1 (!) Shot and finished the match 3: 2.
