Tournament mode

A lot has changed in the tournament mode since 2013. The rate system was abolished because the match time could not be calculated. Matches could last between three and five sets. Good timing was therefore not possible. The game distances were set at 30 points in the pre-qualifying rounds and 40 points in the main qualification and in the knockout games. A tie is possible in the qualifying rounds. In the knockout round, overtime (shootout) is played in the event of a tie. Each of the two players starts with the initial push. Whoever scores more points wins the match. If there is also a tie in extra time, the kick starts again until a winner is determined. The shot clock was on 40 seconds.

Four qualifying rounds were played. From the last qualifying round, the 12 group winners and the three best runners-up (lucky losers) qualified for the final round. The main tournament was played with 32 participants.

In the event of a tie, the following order was taken:

  1. MP = match points
  2. GD = general average
  3. HS = maximum series

Seeded players and wild cards

From 2017 the number of seeded players increased to 14. There are only three wild cards . One UMB wild card and two for the host.

The first 14 players in the world rankings and the wildcard players automatically took part as players in the tournament in the knockout round. The first four of the world rankings are placed at positions 1, 16, 8 and 9.

Tournament commentary

qualification

From a German point of view, nine players took part, including the reigning German champion Ronny Lindemann , Martin Horn and the young hopeful Dustin Jäschke . Lindemann had to play in the PP qualification, Horn and Jäschke only in the P qualification due to their world ranking points. Both were drawn there in Group J and already met there, which means that only one of the two can move on to one round.

Horn won his first group game against Jäschke just 30:29 in 23 shots. In the second group game, Jäschke met the Korean Oh Sung-kyu and won with 30:21 in 22 shots. Horn also met the Korean in the last group game, whom he defeated in 23 shots with 30:24. After two wins, he was able to move on to one lap as group winner. Lindemann also made it into the final qualifying round as group winners. Both have thus earned four world ranking points.

In the last qualifying round, groups A, G and L separated with a competition each, so that there the best GD decided on the winner and entry into the main field. Horn won a game and was defeated by the Korean world champion from 2014 Choi Sung-won with only one point, but was best runner-up in the group and thus the best "lucky loser" for the main round. At the end of the day, Choi had the best general average (GD) with 2.666. The Belgian Eddy Leppens was able to play the best individual performance against Ma Juan Cuong from Vietnam. He beat the Asian 40:11 in just 7 shots for an ED of 5,714. Together with Choi, he also shares the best high series (HS) of 14 points.

Main round

Round 1

At the beginning there was the first big surprise in the first game. Last year's overall winner Dick Jaspers from the Netherlands was defeated by the unknown qualifier Choi Wan-jung from Korea with 32:40. The only 18-year-old reigning junior world champion Cho Myung-woo from Korea was seeded for the main draw due to a wild card issued by the host FC Porto and met Frédéric Caudron from Belgium. He lost just two points. Horn met the multiple world champion Eddy Merckx from Belgium in the first game . In the first five shots, however, he couldn't score and so after 20 minutes in the sixth shot the Belgian took the break 21-0. After the break, Horn was able to add a few points to his account, but after only 15 shots the game was over for him with 40:14. But he still takes world ranking points with him, which will secure him a better place in the following tournaments. Daniel Sánchez , who became the new number 1 in the world rankings before his first game due to Jasper's first round defeat, had to wait for this moment for eleven years. Most recently he was the best player in the world from 2004 to 2006. So he also tackled his first game and defeated the Vietnamese Ngo Ding Nai in just 11 shots miming 40:18. It was the best game of the day.

Round of 16

In the round of 16, the surprise man Choi Wan-jung continued his winning streak and kicked his compatriot and namesake Choi Sung-won from the tournament. Leppens, who until then had shown a very good performance with the best game of the entire tournament until then, failed against Sweden's Torbjörn Blomdahl in 19 shots with 40:30. Caudron lost to the strong playing Nguyốn Quốc Nguyện from Vietnam, who meets his compatriot Duong Anh Vu in the quarterfinals . This beat, also surprisingly, the last remaining young Portuguese Ferreira in the tournament. Sanchez met Merckx. Both had only needed 11 and 14 shots to win in the previous round, but both fought hard for victory and needed 27 shots to determine the winner. The Spaniard prevailed by one point.

Quarter finals

In the quarter-finals it was the final destination for Choi. Again it was a Korean game, this time against the only 25-year-old four-time junior world champion Kim Haeng-jik . Lütfi Çenet from Turkey defeated the multiple world champion and world cup winner Torbjörn Blomdahl from Sweden. The third game of this round was purely Vietnamese, with the more experienced Nguyen Quoc Nguyen prevailing against Duong Anh Vu . In the last game, the World Cup winner of 2016/4, Heo Jung-han, met Sanchez and was able to play 40:38 in the semi-finals, where there was an Asian game with Nguyen.

Semifinals

The last remaining European player Çenet played the first game of the semi-finals against junior world champion Kim Haeng-jik and loses 36:40 despite more experience. The young Korean was the first finalist. It is his first participation in the final since 2015/1 in Luxor, then against Jaspers. In the purely Asian second game, the Vietnamese Nguyen was able to prevail with 40:20 in 26 shots and was only the third player from Vietnam to reach the finals of a World Cup tournament. Tran Chi Thanh lost to Daniel Sánchez in the final in Suwon in 2007/7 and Tran Quyet Chien lost to French Jérémy Bury in Guri in 2016/5 .

final

In the purely Asian final, if both players win, it would be the first gold medal in a World Cup. Nguyen, the reigning Asian champion, would be the first Vietnamese to stand on the highest podium for his country. Kim, the reigning vice world champion, opened the game in the first shot with nine points, followed by three and five points and so after three shots it was already 17: 4 for the young Korean from Suwon . In the following 6 shots, however, he could only score one point, while the Vietnamese slowly found their way into the game and also managed a series of nine with 1, 2, 4 and in the ninth inning. So it was 18:20 at break for Nguyen. After the break, Kim had apparently regained his concentration and had increased his lead by 16 points to 34:27 by the 17th inning. Nguyen didn't come any closer with innings of 1, 3, 3, and 1. in the following innings Kim could not make more than 1 or 2 points, but came in the 23rd guild as the first to cross the finish line. Nguyen put in a final sprint with 6 points, but only got 34 points in total and thus missed his goal of becoming the first Vietnamese to win a World Cup tournament.

Qualifying round

For the sake of clarity, qualification rounds 1, 2 and 3 are not shown. These can be looked up under the links at the UMB.

The first in the group go to the final round of the best 32. The order of the players corresponds to the seeding list at the beginning of the tournament, the placement of the results after the group has ended.
