The three- cushion world cup 2012/3 was the third and final UMB / CEB world cup tournament in the 26th year of the three-cushion world cup. It took place from December 2nd to 8th, 2012 in the 5-star hotel "Sunrise Garden Beach Resort" in the southern Egyptian port city of Hurghada on the Red Sea . After the start in 2004, Hurghada was played for the ninth time.

history

Defending champion as the overall winner of 2011 and the winner of the previous tournament was the Swede Torbjörn Blomdahl , who has already won this tournament 40 times as an individual winner and 10 times as the overall winner. In 2012, for the second time since 2003, there was no overall winner, as this would have required at least four tournaments.

In the run-up to the tournament, there were irritations because the registration time set by the UMB (October 15, 2012; 12:00 h GMT / = 14: 00h CEST) was not adhered to and registrations were accepted prematurely. So it happened that players who registered at 2:00 p.m. on the dot were already in 37th place on the reserve player list, after the first registrations had already been accepted at 1:40 p.m. and after 15 minutes all places had already been taken.

Qualifying rounds

In 2008, the former world champion Orie Hida took part as the first woman , but only finished 72nd. Three women played in this tournament, they all came from the Netherlands. Therese Klompenhouwer , 2006 World Cup silver medalist, was placed in the pre-qualifying round due to her world ranking points and qualified for the last qualifying round in which she failed. The other players, Joke Breur and Karina Jetten ( women's vice world champion from 2008) were eliminated in the P-Quali and PPP-Quali. The German Martin Horn , who has not been among the twelve seeded players for a long time, but was given a wildcard by the CEB, was accompanied by his former club mate Markus Dömer . He had to start in the P qualifying, but had few problems with his group opponents there. In the final qualifying round, he failed to the Spaniard Javier Palazón in 2-0 sets and finished second in the group. So Horn was once again the only German in the final round. From an Austrian point of view, Andreas Efler could not qualify for the final round as second in the group, as he had to give way to the Danish Thomas Andersen due to the better GD if there was a tie . This moved on as the first qualifier of the tournament one round. Arnim Kahofer , also in second place in his group, did not make it into the final round either. In Group E all players had won / lost one game each, but the Dutchman Jean Paul de Bruijn was able to move into first place and advance to the main round despite the poorer GD but due to the better set ratio. The junior world champion from 1999 and World Cup second from 2008/1 and 2009/3 Nikos Polychronopoulos from Greece had a good start against the Czech Radek Novak. He swept it off the table in two sets with 15: 1 and 15: 5 in seven shots each . His GD of 2.142 was the best in the preliminary round so far. After that, however, he lost his game against the Korean newcomer Kim Jae-guen and had to let him go to the "last 32". Kim was the second qualifier for the final round. Peter Ceulemans, grandson of the three-cushion legend Raymond Ceulemans , played the best game of the preliminary round. With two 2-set wins each against Roland Forthomme from Belgium (15:13, 15: 4; GD 1.764) and the French Pierre Soumagne (15: 9, 15: 4; GD 2.727) he not only had the best GD, but also moved into the finals as third in the league of qualifiers. He also played the second best high series (HS) with ten collisions in a row. Rui-Manuel Costa from Portugal canceled the tournament, he was replaced by Murat Tüzül from Turkey, who was the best runner-up in the pre-qualification group. He took his chance and was able to move on to the top of the group with wins against the Koreans Kang Dong-koong and Ragay Henri from the host country. Palazon made the best HS of the preliminary round with twelve billiards in a row.

Main round

The round of the “last 32” was played from December 6th to 8th, 2012. The strongest nation in the main draw was Turkey. Five players had made it from the qualification to the round of 32 and formed the nation of seven with the two seeded players Murat Naci Çoklu and Adnan Yüksel . At first it looked like a big surprise when Savas Bulut took the 2-0 lead against Italian Marco Zanetti . After a big fight, however , the Bolzano player caught himself and was able to equalize to 2-2. In the decisive 5th set, however, Zanetti won against the Turks in just five shots with 15: 4 and an ED of 3,000 and made it to the second round. Murat Tüzül had a tough opponent with the Belgian Frédéric Caudron , but was able to take the lead 1-0. Caudron was able to win the second set with 15:12. Then the fighting strength of the Turk was extinguished and he had to surrender at 7:15 and 5:15. Martin Horn was also successful when he took a 2-0 lead in the game against Jean-Paul de Bruijn. However, the break did not suit him so well. Set three and four went to the Dutchman. In the last and decisive set there was a head-to-head race that the Essen-based driver then just won with 15:12. The current world champion Eddy Merckx from Belgium awaited him in the round of 16 , who had no problems with Spaniard Javier Palazon in his first round match and sent him home 3-1. In the final there was again a Belgian-Turkish duel. Here Caudron won 3-0 sets against Lütfi Çenet , who played his first World Cup final.
