The three- cushion world cup 1990/5 was the fifth world cup tournament in the fifth year of the three-cushion world cup. It took place from December 7th to December 9th 1990 in this discipline of carom billiards on the Balearic island of Mallorca in Spain . It was the third three cushion World Cup tournament in Palma .
After two final defeats in 1987 in Paris against Raymond Ceulemans and in Valkenburg against Torbjörn Blomdahl it worked this time for the 28-year-old Italian Marco Zanetti with his first World Cup victory. With a truly unfavorable draw, he had a very difficult task ahead of him. After the first victory in the 1/16 final against the German Frank Jungfleisch , the very strong American Sang Chun Lee from Korea waited in the second round . After five hard-fought sets, Zanetti finally won the fifth set 15-2 in three shots. The next heavy chunk lurked with Blomdahl in the quarter-finals. Here, too, it went over five sentences. Again Zanetti showed his current class in the fifth set. He finished 15-4 in five shots. In the semifinals there was a smooth 3-0 win against Richard Bitalis, who played big this season . In the final, the World Cup leader Raymond Ceulemans was the opponent. Here he only had to hand in the third set and won 4: 1 sets. It was the Bozener's best performance in his billiards career.
The tournament was played again with 28 participants. This means that significantly more players have the opportunity to take part in a World Cup tournament. The first four of the world rankings were set for the second round. The whole tournament was played in the KO system with three sets of 15 points each.
Final round
The tournament tree for the final round is listed below.
The three-cushion World Cup was organized by the founding association, the " Billiards Worldcup Association " (BWA) until 1998 . Disputes between the BWA and the world association Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) led to parallel tournaments between 1994 and 1997. The UMB / BWA organized the tournament together until the beginning of 1999. Since the dissolution of the BWA in 1999, the UMB has been the sole organizer. From 1988-1991 the UMB did not host any world championships. During this time, the annual overall winner of the World Cup was crowned world champion.
