The three- cushion world cup 1996/4 was the fourth and last UMB world cup tournament in the eleventh year of the three- cushion world cup. The tournament took place from 13 to 16 June 1996 in this discipline of carom billiards in Athens . It was the second three-cushion World Cup tournament in Athens.

history

The World Cup tournament in Athens ended with a surprise. The Belgian Francis Forton was only able to survive the qualifying round for the second time after 1995 in Bad Mondorf and won the final with 3-2 sets against Christian Rudolph from Cologne . In the semifinals against the Portuguese Jorge Theriaga threatened the end. Forton won the fifth set just 15:14. Rudolph also had big problems in the semi-finals against an extremely defensive Egidio Viera. He also only prevailed in the fifth set with 15:10 and ruined his very good general average (GD) with just 0.797. Rudolph showed an absolute world class performance in the quarterfinals against the Spaniard Daniel Sánchez . He won with 3: 1 sets and achieved an outstanding average of 2,944 . Sánchez also played 2,058.

By reaching the round of 16, Sánchez was also able to repeat the UMB overall World Cup victory from the previous year. Rudolph was able to return to the group of seeded players by participating in the finals.

The exact price money could not be determined from the documents.

Tournament mode

In the qualifying round in groups, two sets of 15 points each are played in round robin mode. The group winners qualify for the 1/16 finals. There are also 16 seeded players. From the main competition (1/16 final), all games are played on three sets of 15 points each. Third place has not been played since the 1996/97 season. This means that there is no game for third place and there are two third-placed players.

In the event of a tie, the following order will be applied:

  1. MP = match points
  2. GD = general average
  3. HS = maximum series
