history
The Turkish World Cup has been the prelude to the international tournament for years, with the venues alternating in a carousel cycle. After Antalya, Istanbul and Bursa it is now Antalya’s turn again. It is the 22nd World Cup in Turkey and the seventh in Antalya. Last year's winner was Frédéric Caudron . The Belgian beat Dick Jaspers from the Netherlands with 40:14 in just 7 shots.
For the first time, according to the new prize money system from 2018, the losers in the qualifying round will also be rewarded with € 500. In this way, the UMB wants to ensure that there is also a higher incentive for these players to take part in the tournament series. But overall the prize money has increased. This has been a long-awaited requirement by the players as the travel expenses are not insignificant.
Some women are also taking part in the European tournament that is close to them. In addition to the world champion Therese Klompenhouwer from the Netherlands, this includes Silvia Eckel and the German-Turkish woman Gülşen Degener . Germany is represented by 14 players, including many German-Turks, such as Çengiz Karaça . Martin Horn plays along as well as Christian Rudolph and Ronny Lindemann . Turkey has 35 players and 29 billiard artists have come from Korea.
The local World Cup is important for the players in one more point than that, together with the following in Vietnam, it defines the 20 best players who will then be allowed to travel to the first Masters in July.
Tournament mode
A lot has changed in the tournament mode since 2013. The rate system was abolished because the match time could not be calculated. Matches could last between three and five sets. Good timing was therefore not possible. The game distances were set at 30 points in the pre-qualifying rounds and 40 points in the main qualification and in the knockout games. A tie is possible in the qualifying rounds. In the knockout round, overtime (shootout) is played in the event of a tie. Each of the two players starts with the initial push. Whoever scores more points wins the match. If there is also a tie in extra time, the kick starts again until a winner is determined. The shot clock was on 40 seconds.
Four qualifying rounds are played. From the last qualifying round, the 12 group winners and the three best runners-up (lucky losers) qualify for the final round. The main tournament is played with 32 participants.
In the event of a tie, the following order will be applied:
- MP = match points
- GD = general average
- HS = maximum series
Seeded players and wild cards
From 2017 the number of players seeded will increase to 14. There are only three wild cards . One UMB wild card and two for the host.
The first 14 players in the world rankings and the wildcard players automatically took part as players in the tournament in the knockout round. The first four of the world rankings are placed at positions 1, 16, 8 and 9.
