Career

Born in a poor region of the Vietnamese highlands ( Gia Lai Province ), Nguyen started playing billiards at the age of eight in a local billiards club with two small tables. Sport was still a luxury in this area at the time. He is the middle child of three, with an older sister and a younger brother. The parents didn't like that he played billiards. His mother never visited him to play games, his father only twice in all these years. At the age of 18, Nguyen moved to the capital Ho Chi Minh City to study electronics at the Polytechnic University . Because he would rather play billiards than study, it took him six instead of four years to study. In 2008, after finishing with two championship titles, he played his first national championship. In 2013 he opened his own billiard hall, the “Karo Club”, with six tables near the airport. His partner runs the club, he is rarely there himself, sometimes training for a few hours or playing with customers. Since he cannot make a living with the club, he mainly earns his living with houses that he rents and sublet as offices.

In 2009 he won the HCM City Championship, in 2010 he was nominated for the local team and a year later for the national team of Vietnam. In 2011 he was victorious in the final of the Southeast Asian Games against his compatriot Dương Anh Vũ . In 2013 he won the silver medal at the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games in New Songdo City, South Korea . He lost there just 39:40 against the Japanese Ryūji Umeda . A year later, the first medal followed at the World Cup (bronze) and in 2017 silver and the gold medal at the Asian Championships. That was also the year in which he rose to world number 13. In October 2018 he was able to win a medal (bronze) at a three-cushion world championship for the first time. In the semifinals in Cairo he was defeated by the French Jérémy Bury with 20:40 in 19 shots.
