The 2018 three-cushion world championship took place in the Egyptian capital Cairo from October 2nd to 6th . It was the fifth three-cushion world championship in Egypt after 1933, 1973, 1981 and 1987 .
The world championship has been played in the three- cushion carom variant since 1928 . Defending champion was the Belgian Frédéric Caudron , who was eliminated in the round of 16 against the silver medalist Jérémy Bury from France. It is Jasper's fourth World Cup victory after 2000, 2004 and 2011. At the same time, he increased the tournament record set by the Vietnamese Mã Minh Cẩm the previous year in the general average (GD) from 2.123 to 2.352.
At the same time the Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) general assembly took place on the last day of the match . Raymond Ceulemans was made an honorary member of the UMB for his achievements. The Turkish association chairman Ersann Erna and the Austrian president Herbert Tür were appointed new members of the board. Tournament commentary
The Dane Tonny Carlsen set in his group match against the Colombian Jose Juan Garcia the record set by the Egyptian Sameh Sidhom at the 2015 World Cup in the highest series (HS) of 19 points.
Vietnam showed a very good performance in the group phase and made it into the final round with all five participants, as did their Asian permanent rivals Korea. Due to the placement, however, there was a purely Vietnamese game between Dương Anh Vũ and Trần Quyết Chiến , in which one had to be eliminated. This was, after a tie and subsequent penalty shootout, the first-named with 1: 2. This made Vietnam the strongest nation in the round of 16. Of the otherwise strong Koreans, only Heo Jung-han survived the first final round. In the duel between the two veterans Marco Zanetti (ITA) and Torbjörn Blomdahl (SWE), the Italian lost out with 21:40. Of the originally eight Americans, including the current Pan American champion Pedro Gonzales, only the Colombians Robinson Morales and Pedro Piedrabuena (USA) made it to the final round, which Morales won against the world champion Filipos Kasidokostas from Greece. Kasidokostas is still struggling with his hand switching from right to left after an illness forced him to do so. Piedrabuena lost to Ngô Đình Nại with 34:40. Tonny Carlsen was able to continue his strong performance and also made it to the second round. Surprisingly, the four-time Spanish world champion Daniel Sánchez lost his first round match, as did Eddy Merckx against the Spaniard and junior world champion Ruben Legazpi. Sameh Sidhom was also able to convince in front of a home crowd and clearly defeated the Korean Kang Dong-koong with 40:22. The best first round match was played by the Dutchman Dick Jaspers against the Egyptian Ahmed Abdallah with 40: 8 in just 13 shots. Jérémy Bury from France and defending champion Frédéric Caudron completed the round of 16. Carlsen, vice world champion in 2000 and No. 31 in the world, beat Ngo with 40:26 in just 17 shots. It got exciting in the final phase of the game between Eddy Leppens from Belgium and Semih Saygıner from Turkey . At 35:39, Saygıner failed 5 shots to zero before he could finally achieve his match point. Mã Minh Cẩm seemed to be in a hurry to build in his game against Blomdahl. In just 13 shots he was able to beat the Swedes 40:13.
