The 2012 three-cushion world championship took place from September 5th to 9th in the Portuguese port city of Porto . It was the first World Cup hosted by Portugal.

The world championship has been played in the three- cushion carom variant since 1928 . The defending champion was Dick Jaspers from the Netherlands .

Tournament commentary

A total of 48 participants had qualified for the tournament. In the preliminary round, round robin mode was played in groups of three to 40  points . The 16 group winners advanced. From the second round onwards, the knockout system was used to play at 40 points. This rule was changed compared to the previous year and has been in effect since July 7, 2012.

Germany was represented by Martin Horn from Essen and Markus Dömer from Dortmund, who took part in the World Cup for the first time. The 1996 World Cup third-placed Gerhard Kostistansky played for Austria, Switzerland was not represented.

The 15-time world champion Torbjörn Blomdahl from Sweden caused a negative surprise . Despite the tie in points, he was the last to complete the group stage and was eliminated from the tournament in 33rd place - his worst result in years. For Markus Dömer, the World Cup was also not very successful. After two defeats against the strong Eddy Leppens from Belgium and the Turks Lütfi Çenet in the group stage, he had to give up the sails. The Dutch defending champions lived up to their role as favorites and won both group games. In his second game against the Argentine Juan-Pablo Sisterna , he only needed 16  shots to win the game and had an excellent ED of 2,500. The Korean Lee Choong-bok also succeeded in his game against the Spaniard Javier Palazón . Kim Kyung-roul from Korea topped the two with 2.857 against the Colombian Juan-Carlos Toro. The best GD in the group stage was played by Turkey's Murat Naci Çoklu with 2.105. The French Jérémy Bury managed the highest series (HS) at 14.

The final round was dominated by Eddy Merckx from Belgium . First he sent Martin Horn home in just 15 shots (40:15) and a GD of 2.666. In the quarter-finals he gave the Egyptian Sameh Sidhom no chance in 18 shots (40:19). Just a week after his victory in Lommel, Merckx met his compatriot, world number one Frédéric Caudron, again in the semi-finals . He prevailed again (40:30) and met the Korean Choi Sung-won in the final . He also had nothing to oppose the Belgian at 40:24. Merckx won the world championship for the second time after 2006. For Choi, the lost premium of € 100,000 or € 200 monthly pension allowance until the end of his life will have been more painful than the silver medal. The Korean government has suspended this award for the first world champion from their country.

On the part of the players, massive criticism was leveled at the clearly too small tournament hall. When first seen, many thought it was the training room. During the group phase, the room was divided into two halves with two tables each, separated by a grandstand. It only offered space for 35 spectators. The grandstand was dismantled for the final round, so that 150 spectators could follow the action. Eliminated players who wanted to watch - there was compulsory attendance during the entire tournament - and who did not find a seat in time, had to watch the games on monitors in an anteroom. The former 8-time world champion Ludo Dielis from Belgium was among the spectators . Dielis, head of the organizing committee for the 2013 World Cup in Antwerp, was able to gain valuable suggestions for organizing the World Cup in his home town, both positive and negative. The fact that he can introduce a fellow countryman as defending champion in 2013 will make it easier for him to finance the organization, both with government agencies and local sponsors. Dielis is known for making it easy for him to raise funds.
