Tournament commentary
qualification
In the qualification four of the nine German players reached the first round of the final round: Christian Rudolph , Andreas Niehaus, Cengiz Karaca and Markus Dömer. Rudolph had to compete there against the world number one Torbjörn Blomdahl . The two Austrians Andreas Efler and Andreas Kronlachner , as well as the Swiss Thorsten Danielsson, did not make it into the "last 32". With Giorgio Mancini there was a second Italian player besides Marco Zanetti . Surprisingly, the German-Turkish Karaca was able to prevail in his group against Kronlachner. Niehaus also won his two games without any problems and played in the 1/16 finals in the purely German encounter against Martin Horn . The best game was shown by Belgian Jozef Philipoom against Jean Reverchon from France in 13 shots with an ED of 2.307. The highest series (HS) of 11 was made by Karaca and Michael Lohse from Denmark.
Final round
Round 1
The first half of the 1/16 final caused a few surprises as six of the eight qualifiers sent their seeded opponents home. Not only did world champion Eddy Merckx lose to the Portuguese Rui-Manuel Costa, the Swede Blomdahl also suffered a defeat against Rudolph. The Greek ex-junior world champion Nikos Polychronopoulos lost to Roland Forthomme from Belgium, as did the Dutchman Raimond Burgman against his Egyptian opponent Sameh Sidhom. Only defending champion Filipos Kasidokostas from Greece and the Spanish world champion from 1998, 2005 and 2010, Daniel Sánchez won their first round matches as a seeded player. The second half didn't turn out quite as spectacularly. Dick Jaspers from the Netherlands won his game against Dömer, who at times led with 8 points at the beginning of the game. The Italian Marco Zanetti played the best game (ED 2,352) in 17 recordings against Radek Novak from the Czech Republic. Vice European champion Frédéric Caudron from Belgium also brought his first game home with no threat. The Turk Lütfi Çenet screwed the HS up another 3 points to 14.
Round of 16
Marco Zanetti remained true to his favorite role after the victories at the Lausanne Billard Masters and AGIPI Billard Masters and won against the German top player Martin Horn in only 16 shots with 40:15. The only remaining German is the 1996 world champion, Christian Rudolph, who made it to the quarter-finals. He beat the leading Egyptian player Sameh Sidhom in just 17 shots with 40: 8, who thus played the worst result (ED 0.500) in the final round. Jaspers achieved a similarly good result as Zanetti against the Turk Lütfi Cenet, whom he beat 40:18 in 20 shots. Caudron had a harder time with the Dutchman Jean Paul de Bruijn. It took him 31 shots to win the 40:28. The second qualifier to beat a seeded player was Roland Forthomme from Belgium, who sent the Spaniard Sánchez back to Catalonia after 29 shots with 40:36. He was the first player to regret that there was no follow-up in the final round. The missing points would still have been within reach. In the game of the defending champion Kasidokostas against Barbeillon, the French led up to the 29th recordings with 39:38 when he missed his match point. The Greek had victory within their grasp, but only made 1 point. Again Barbeillon had match point, again he missed. The Greek rallied and converted his match point to the 40:39 final score. Rui-Manuel Costa from Portugal and Glenn Hofman from the Netherlands were not in as much of a hurry as their teammates . They delivered the longest game. Both were mostly tied. After 40 shots, Hofman had a 5-point lead to 36:31. Costa failed in the following shot and the Dutchman ended the game with a series of 4. Both players were the only ones with the aforementioned Egyptian and de Bruijn who played an ED under 1.
Quarter finals
Caudron was the first player in the semi-finals. After 20 shots it was over for Çoklu. Both had played a series of 10, but in the end the world number two from Belgium was the better player. Christian Rudolph continued his streak of success. After only 18 admissions, he was the second semi-finalist. Zanetti had a chance to win after a 14 series in the 13th shots at 38:26, but missed his newcomer. Jaspers added two balls, but then had to give them back to Zanetti. He was able to play his first point, but the subsequent match point just missed. After another point from the Dutchman, the Bolzano player had match point again, but this went even closer. Jaspers then missed and there was match point number three, which, like his predecessors, passed by a hair's breadth. Jaspers didn't want to admit defeat and then played a series of 5 and came up to 33:39. Finally Zanetti managed to convert his match point in the 17th shot and was now the third semi-finalist. At the same time it was recorded at the next table in recording number 28 37:35 for Kasidokostas. Hofman was standing at the table and had already played three balls, he followed ball four and now had match point. He scored, the surprise was perfect, he had defeated the defending champion and was now last in the semi-finals.
Semifinals
Rudolph and Hofman played the first game, the two of them were in no hurry. Both qualifiers showed signs of wear and tear due to the many games they played. Rudolph needed 41 shots to reach the final with 40:23.
In the second game it was Zanetti against Caudron. In the third tournament in a row, the two faced each other in a final round. The Italian won the two previous finals. In mid-March he won the Lausanne Billard Masters and a week later the AGIPI Billard Masters in Schiltigheim . This time too, Zanetti quickly pulled away. In the 5th shot he was already 15: 3 ahead, Caudron hadn't been able to score a point in the last four shots. But then the Belgian played a series of 28 points, just one point past a new world or European record. He was the fourth player after Junichi Komori (1993), Raymond Ceulemans (1998), and Roland Forthomme (2012), who played this world record. After recording six it was 15:31. However, Zanetti was not discouraged and scored 19 points in the following five shots, including a series of 13. This brought him back to 34:36. After both players were only able to earn 1 point each in the following shot, the Bolzano player succeeded in winning a series of five in just 12 shots (ED 3.333). It was the third defeat in a row for the Belgian against Zanetti. Caudron remained, in addition to the world record, only the best ED of the tournament with 3,636.
During the Zanetti 13 series in the 9th recording, the shot clock failed. Zanetti was asked by the officials to continue playing, the time announcements would be verbal. The repair was progressing and the shot clock sounded after his 8th ball. Zanetti was then irritated because he had not been informed about it. There was a little dispute between him and the officials. Zanetti asked Caudron if he knew about it. He denied this and allowed Zanetti, gentlemanly, to continue playing. Not irritated, Zanetti then shot five more balls.
final
Christian Rudolph, who had been playing a great tournament up until then, seemed to have worn out and didn't stand a chance against Marco Zanetti in the final. The man from Bolzano hit him with 40:10 in just 18 shots. The Italian was able to set a new European record (unofficial world record) in the GD of 2,500 in this tournament.
qualification
The game was played on 30 points with a kick. The shot clock was on 40 seconds.
