The three-cushion European championship 2009 was the 66th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from 21 to 24 May 2009 in Odense in the Danish region of Syddanmark . It was the sixth three-cushion European Championship in Denmark.
history
There were consistently very good performances in the group stage of this European Championship. The Swede Torbjörn Blomdahl and the Dane Dion Nelin won a set in one shot. The best performance in the preliminary round was shown by the German Martin Horn . He won his group with the Excellent Average (GD) of 2,428.
The second round was the final destination for Martin Horn. In a hard-fought five-set match he was defeated by Belgian Jozef Philipoom after a 2-1 lead in the fifth set with 6:15. Eddy Merckx , who was best in the preliminary round in terms of match and game points, failed against the Dane Brian Knudsen. With Christian Rudolph , however, the second German participant made it into the quarter-finals. But here came the end for him against the Turk Tayfun Taşdemir . With Dick Jaspers and the player with the best average failed the tournament. In the semifinals there were surprisingly clear wins for Daniel Sánchez and Frédéric Caudron . The final then met the high expectations. Sanchez won in five sets. The last one at 15:13. It was the third three-band title for the Spaniard at an EM.
mode
The tournament was played with 32 participants. In the group games, two sets of 15 points were used to win. From the round of 16 onwards there were three sets of wins per game. Third place was no longer played out.
