The three-cushion European championship in 1978 was the 36th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from February 21 to 26, 1978 in Copenhagen . It was the second three-cushion European Championship in Denmark after 1964.

history

The usual picture of the last few years continued in Copenhagen. Despite a loss in the last game against his compatriot Ludo Dielis , Raymond Ceulemans secured his 16th European three-cushion title. Again the battle for the first three places was in the foreground. They were important because they qualified for the three cushion World Cup in the American gaming metropolis Las Vegas . The strong Dane Peter Thøgersen took advantage of the home advantage and repeated his sensational second place at the 1972 European Championship in Dortmund . The French Richard Bitalis played an excellent tournament. With a new French record, he finished fourth. For the Austrian permanent medal collector Johann Scherz it was only enough for fifth place this time. The German Dieter Müller from Berlin set a new German record in the best individual average (BED) with 1.875 and achieved his best placement in three-cushion at European level with sixth place. Even if only very close, a new record in the tournament average was played again with 0.949 .

mode

The game was played in the system “everyone against everyone” to 60 points with additional push / equal intake .
