The three-cushion European championship in 1988 was the 46th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from 10 to 13 March 1988 in Vejle in the Danish region of Syddanmark . After 1964 and 1978 in Copenhagen it was the third three-cushion European Championship in Denmark.

history

The field of participants for the European Championship was not certain until shortly before the start of the tournament, because the German Dieter Müller was not registered as a professional at the BWA by the German Billiards Association. As a result, the BWA refused to let all BWA professionals (Ceulemans, Dielis, van Bracht, Müller and Torbjörn Blomdahl) start. For this reason, Müller was allowed to play. It was played in the sentence system again. The winner for the third time after 1985 and 1986 was the Swede Torbjörn Blomdahl . In the final he defeated the defending champion Raymond Ceulemans with 3-1 sets. Of the three German participants, only Dieter Müller made it into the knockout round. In the quarter-finals, however, it was over after a 5-set defeat against the Belgian Artistique World Champion Raymond Steylaerts. Günter Siebert played very well . In the strongest group of the preliminary round, he only achieved fourth place in the group despite the second-best general average (GD). For the first time in the history of the three- cushion European Championship, the magic mark of more than 1 on the tournament average was played with 1.024 .

mode

In the preliminary round, the game was played in the "everyone against everyone" system for three sets of 15 points each. The first two in the group qualified for the quarter-finals. The losers in the knockout games played out places three to eight.
