The three-cushion European championship in 1972 was the 30th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from 9 to 13 February 1972 in Dortmund . It was the fourth three-cushion European championship in Germany.

history

The Belgian Raymond Ceulemans won his eleventh title in a row at this three-cushion European championship and finally held all tournament records by a large margin. His best performance was the new European record in the best individual average (BED) with 2.857 . He achieved this record in the game against the reigning vice world champion Rini van Bracht with a smooth win with 60:15 in 21 shots. This performance has never been achieved in a three-cushion world championship. The Dane Peter Thøgersen was the only one who managed to beat Ceulemans, albeit only very narrowly, with 60:59 in 53 shots. Thøgersen was the first Scandinavian to win a medal at a European championship. The German champion Günter Siebert did not get past eighth place in his first European Championship participation with only one win against the Italian Antonio Oddo. From Friday to Sunday the championship was reported daily on radio and television. For the first time in Germany, a billiards championship was broadcast live for 30 minutes on the second German television (ZDF).

mode

The game was played in two preliminary round groups “everyone against everyone” to 60 points with an equal number of additional points . The groups consisted of five players each. The last two in the group were eliminated. The game points from the preliminary round were taken into the final round. The games against the eliminated players were not rated in the final table. Ninth place was played out.
