The three-cushion European championship in 1971 was the 29th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from January 20 to 24, 1971 in Geel in the Belgian province of Antwerp . It was a year after Geel the sixth three-cushion European championship in Belgium.

history

Once again, Raymond Ceulemans won a European championship with a new European record. In the general average (GD) it screwed the new record to 1.621 . He secured his tenth three-cushion title in a row. As almost always in recent years, it was far superior to its competitors. The Austrian Johann Scherz secured only one record . In the best individual average he even had the opportunity to attack Ceulemans' world and European records. He had 58 points in 22 shots in the game against Laurent Boulanger . If he had scored the last two points in the next shot, it would be the best game ever played in a tournament worldwide. With two recordings he would have set Ceulemans' record. Unfortunately there were three recordings. With 2,400 he played the best single game that has been played at European Championships so far. For the German champion Hans-Dietrich Runkehl from Düsseldorf, the championship ended in tenth place in his first international appearance.

mode

The game was played in two preliminary round groups “everyone against everyone” to 60 points with an equal number of additional points . The groups consisted of six players each. The top four in each group made it to the finals. The fifth and sixth places in each group went to the PÜlatzierungsgruppe. The game points from the preliminary round were taken into the final round. In these groups, too, “everyone against everyone” played on 60 points with a follow-up / equal intake .
