The 2008 three-cushion European Championship was the 65th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from June 5th to 8th, 2008 in Florange in the French department of Moselle. It was the tenth three-cushion European Championship in France in the 76-year history of this championship.

history

Almost all of the favorites prevailed in the preliminary round groups. Spaniard Daniel Sánchez showed the best performance . But that was of little use to him. Because in the last sixteen the end came after a 2-1 lead against the Belgian Roland Forthomme . The Dutchman Dick Jaspers made the best impression in the round of 16 . In a game that was never endangered, he won 3-0 sets against former German world champion Christian Rudolph . The current German champion Martin Horn fared not much better . There was a 3-1 defeat against Sweden's Torbjörn Blomdahl . In the quarterfinals there were only average performances. From the semi-finals, Dick Jaspers showed his class. First he eliminated Roland Forthomme with 3-0 sets and an average of 3.214. Then came the best final in three-cushion history. Against Torbjörn Blomdahl, who played an average of 3,000, there was a smooth 3-0 win. With 45 points in 8 shots he exceeded the previous best performance of Frédéric Caudron , achieved in 1996 at the World Cup tournament in Taegu, Korea, of 45 points in 9 shots. This resulted in the new European record with the best individual average (BED) of 5.625 . Dick Jaspers played a prolonged European record in the highest series (HS) of 34 points in the final against Sweden's Torbjörn Blomdahl by ending the first set with a series of 13 points, and he knocked out the second set in the first recording (15 points) and started with 6 points in the third set. The UMB even regards this record as a world record, although it was not achieved at a world championship or a world cup. This also applies to his ED of 5,625.

mode

The tournament was played with 32 participants. In the group games, two sets of 15 points were used to win. From the round of 16 onwards there were three sets of wins per game. Third place was no longer played out.
