The three-cushion European championship in 1961 was the 19th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from 9 to 12 March 1961 in Trieste . It was the first European billiards championship in Italy.

history

The foundation stone for a new era in the international three-volume scene was laid in Trieste. For the first time there was the 23-year-old Raymond Ceulemans , who from then on was to dominate the scene at will for the next 25 years. He was able to win the bronze medal right away. The winner for the second time after 1958 was the Austrian Johann Scherz . He used the opportunity for the last time and won all games confidently and was therefore deservedly European champion. All participants and visitors to this European Championship were thrilled by the picturesque backdrop of the tournament hall. This championship was again televised on a Eurovision program.

mode

The game was played in two preliminary round groups “everyone against everyone” to 60 points with an equal number of additional points . The groups consisted of 5 players each. The first three of the group formed the final group A. The game points from the preliminary round were taken into the final round. The fourth and fifth of the preliminary round groups formed the end group B. The games played in the preliminary round groups were taken into the end groups.
