The three-cushion European championship in 2002 was the 59th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from May 1st to 3rd, 2002 in Izmir . It was the first three-cushion European Championship in Turkey in the 70-year history of this tournament.

history

The Belgian all-rounder Frédéric Caudron secured his first European three- cushion title in Izmir. But it was a tough fight, because apart from the round of 16 he needed five sets to win. Once again the Danish three-band players presented themselves very strongly. For the second time since 2001 there were two medals. The Turks organized this championship in an exemplary manner. For all participants in this championship they took over, what is not usual, the accommodation costs during the tournament. The championship, which was broadcast extensively on Turkish television, had a compatriot in Tayfun Taşdemir who set all tournament records but had no chance in the quarterfinals against defending champion Torbjörn Blomdahl . For the participants from the German-speaking area, this time it was the end of the last sixteen.

mode

The tournament was played with 32 participants. The entire tournament was played on three sets of 15 points each. Third place was no longer played out. There was a bronze medal for each of the losers in the semi-finals.
