The three-cushion European championship 2003 was the 60th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from May 1st to 4th, 2002 in Göynük . It was the second three-cushion European Championship in a row in Turkey.

history

The European Championship was played in the same mode as the World Championship. After the group games, the knockout round followed. The winner for the first time was the 2000 world champion Dick Jaspers from the Netherlands. In the final he defeated the Belgian defending champion Frédéric Caudron with 3-2 sets. The Swede Torbjörn Blomdahl provided the highlight of the EM . With 2.376 he set a new European record in the general average (GD) and only finished fifth. But he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against the later runner-up Frédéric Caudron, who set the new European record in the best individual average (BED) against him. The old record was set by Torbjörn Blomdahl in the round of 16 with 3.461 . There was light and shadow for the German participants. Martin Horn shared third place with the Italian Marco Zanetti . For Stefan Galla , the group stage was already the end of the line. A defeat in the first match against the Egyptian Ihab El Messery was practically the end. The Austrian Gerhard Kostistansky fared not much better. Despite a good performance, he only finished third in Group B and was eliminated.

mode

The tournament was played with 32 participants. In the group games, two sets of 15 points were used to win. From the round of 16 onwards there were three sets of wins per game. Third place was no longer played out.
