history

Memorial for the massacre on October 3, 1943 in Lingiades

During the occupation of Greece by the German Wehrmacht in World War II , Lieutenant Colonel Josef Salminger was killed by members of the EDES resistance group on October 1, 1943 . This led to retaliation against civilians in the wider area. The commander of the 1st Mountain Division of the Wehrmacht, Hubert Lanz , demanded in the corps daily order "... a relentless retaliation action within 20 km of the murder site ..." The village was under fire on October 3, initially from artillery positions on Ioannina Island and from Perama taken. In the following massacre, 82 residents were murdered, including 34 children up to the age of 11. Almost all houses and huts except the church and the school building were destroyed.

On the occasion of his state visit to Greece, Federal President Joachim Gauck and Greek President Karolos Papoulias visited Lingiades on March 7, 2014 “to commemorate the victims of a cruel massacre.” At the same time, Gauck asked the families of the murdered for forgiveness on behalf of Germany.
