The 1968 European three-cushion championship was the 26th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from March 14th to 17th, 1968 in Madrid . It was the third three-cushion European championship in Madrid after 1948 and 1953. The European Championship was originally awarded to Bilbao . For organizational reasons, the EM was moved to Madrid at short notice.
history
The usual picture of the last few years continued in Madrid. Once again, Raymond Ceulemans became the undefeated three-cushion European champion. Ceulemans once again achieved all of the tournament bests. But again there was no new European record. The performances of the players after him are also getting better and better. For the first time in the history of the European Championship, three players achieved a general average (GD) of over 1. Thus, at 0.893, the best tournament average in 36-year tournament history was achieved. That Belgium is a three-cushion power in Europe was once again shown with two championship medals. The only one who could keep up with the Belgians for years was the Austrian Johann Scherz . After two European Championship titles, he won his sixth silver medal in Madrid. Due to the live broadcast on Spanish TV, the final game between Ceulemans and Scherz started at 12 noon. The actually registered German Ernst Rudolph had to cancel the EM for family reasons. As a result, the younger brother of the German record champion August Tiedtke was reported. Gert Tiedtke showed a very good performance in his first EM appearance and ended up sixth.
mode
The game was played in the system “everyone against everyone” to 60 points with additional push / equal intake .
