Again a new system was played at this European Championship. There were few surprises in the group games. The third of the last European Championship Raymond Ceulemans had the biggest problems in his group F. He only got ahead through the better sentence ratio. In the very balanced group H, the French cadre specialist Francis Connesson unexpectedly prevailed. Connesson also created a sensation in the quarterfinals. Against Torbjörn Blomdahl , the most constant three-cushion player in recent years, he prevailed with 3-2 sets. Törbjörn Blomdahl's father ensured the best performance in the quarter-finals. Lennart Blomdahl defeated the Austrian Christoph Pilss with 3-0 sets. With the same result, Connesson eliminated the second Blomdahl in the semi-finals and moved into the final. Ceulemans showed in the second semifinals that he is not yet old iron. Against the strongly aspiring Marco Zanetti he won 3-1. In the final he showed his whole routine once again and so the 54-year-old secured the 23rd European three-cushion championship with his victory. So he has won almost half of all titles at 50 three-cushion European championships.
