The three-cushion European championship in 1981 was the 39th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from March 18 to 22, 1981 in Vienna . It was the second three-band European Championship in Vienna after 1965. The Austrian association organized the championship on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.
As more and more associations register for the European championships, a new system with 16 participants was played. So with four participants you could save a day more. The performances at this championship were not very good. It was probably due to the spotlights that Austrian television had set up for the live broadcasts. It was extremely hot at the tables and the gang tee was unusual. The only one who obviously had no problems with that was Raymond Ceulemans . Once again unbeaten with all tournament best performances, he secured the title. The Egidio Vierat in ninth place with the second best general average (GD) showed the problem. Perhaps the pressure was also very high because you had to get into the top three to move into the final round. So many games were played very defensively so as not to lose. The German champion Günter Siebert was on the verge of a surprise in his preliminary round game against Ceulemans. At 55:55, the Belgian ended the game. The local hero and co-favorite Johann Scherz was very disappointed with his performance with 0.806 GD. He has not played in a tournament as badly as in this championship since 1957. For the first time, the 20-year-old Luxembourgish, later multiple world and European champion, Fonsy Grethen took part in a three-cushion European Championship.
