The three-cushion European championship in 1970 was the 28th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from 23 to 26 April 1970 in Tournai in the Belgian province of Hainaut . It was the fifth three-cushion European championship in Belgium since 1932.

history

Despite a defeat against his compatriot Laurent Boulanger , the Belgian Raymond Ceulemans won his ninth three-cushion European title in a row. His greatest opponent in recent years, Johann Scherz , with whom he was a private friend, was once again second for the silver medal. It was important to get into the first three places, because with this placement you had qualified for the world championship in Las Vegas . The German master August Tiedtke achieved this third place . That was a great success at his last European Championship. After 33 years of international tournaments, he had to end his billiards career in 1971 due to illness. He won a total of 1 gold, 11 silver, 8 of them in three-cushion, and 1 bronze medal at European championships. August Tiedtke died on July 11, 1972.

mode

The game was played in two preliminary round groups “everyone against everyone” to 60 points with an equal number of additional points . The groups consisted of five players each. The top three of each group played against the top three of the other group in the final group. The game points from the preliminary round were taken into the final round. The last two in the group were eliminated. The eliminated fourth of the preliminary round groups played for seventh place and the eliminated fifth of the preliminary round groups played for ninth place.
