The three-cushion European championship in 1997 was the 54th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from April 11th to 13th, 1997 in Bad Mondorf . It was the second three-cushion European Championship in Luxembourg after 1986.

history

Luxembourg took over the organization of the 54th European three-cushion championship at short notice. The championship was originally planned in Greece. The main sponsor should be a tobacco company. In the statutes of the CEB, however, it says that cigarette and tobacco companies are not allowed to sponsor European championships. Thus the EM was not financially viable for the Greeks. As in 1986, the Casino 2000 in Bad Mondorf was a perfect host. The winner was the outstanding Spaniard Daniel Sánchez , who achieved all tournament best performances. In the final against the surprise man of the tournament Jean-Christophe Roux, he won with 3-0 sets. Roux eliminated defending champion Jozef Philipoom after a tough fight in the first round and improved from game to game. But he had no chance in the final. Martin Horn from Essen could not repeat his previous success against Sánchez and lost against him in the quarterfinals with 2: 3. Horn finished a good fifth in the end.

mode

The tournament was played with 32 participants. The entire tournament was played on three sets of 15 points each. Third place was no longer played out. There was a bronze medal for each of the losers in the semi-finals.
