The three-cushion European championship in 1990 was the 48th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from 15 to 18 March 1990 in Norrköping in the Swedish province of Östergötland County . It was the second three-cushion European Championship in Sweden after 1980.

history

As in previous years, the European Championship was played with 20 participants. The German champion Hans-Jürgen Kühl prevailed in Group A and was the only one to win all of his preliminary round games. Against the defending champion Lennart Blomdahl, Kühl played his best average with 1,774. Blomdahl was only fourth and was eliminated. In the balanced group B, the artistry world champion Raymond Steylaerts and surprisingly the Greek George Sakkas prevailed. In Group C, the Italian Marco Zanetti had to be satisfied with third place due to the poor set ratio. Torbjörn Blomdahl and Dick Jaspers continued. In Group D, the two favorites Paul Stroobants and Rini van Bracht prevailed. In the quarterfinals that came out for the German champions. Severely weak in the flu, he was defeated by the Dutch ex-European champion Rini van Bracht. With the exception of Stroobants against Vierat, the other quarter-finals were clear affairs for the favorites. There were also clear victories in the semifinals. The excitement of the final, in front of fully occupied grandstands and live TV broadcast, was hard to beat. Blomdahl won the first set and Jaspers the second. Jaspers started the third sentence with a period. From a very difficult position Blomdahl knocked out the game with 15 points in the first shot. He was only the second player after the Japanese Nobuaki Kobayashi who succeeded in this at an international tournament. Jaspers won the fourth set again with 15: 4. Also in the fifth set Jaspers led 11: 8 in 7 takes. To great applause, Blomdahl finished the game with a series of seven points and was three-cushion European champion for the fourth time. The 24-year-old Dick Jaspers, who lost in the final, also made a very strong impression on his European Championship debut.

mode

In the preliminary round, the game was played in the "everyone against everyone" system for two sets of 15 points each. The first two in the group qualified for the quarter-finals. From the quarter-finals onwards, three sets of 15 points each were played. The losers in the knockout games played out places three to eight.
