The three-cushion European championship in 1989 was the 47th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from March 16 to 19, 1989 in Viersen . It was the sixth three-cushion European Championship in Germany.

history

For the first time in the 57-year history of the three-cushion EM, father and son stood on the podium at the end of the tournament. Lennart Blomdahl sensationally won the title. In the preliminary round he came second only because of the better set ratio. From the quarterfinals he played very well and was deservedly European champion. The French Richard Bitalis came in second despite all the best performances in the tournament. The big favorite Torbjörn Blomdahl secured third place. The German professional Dieter Müller lost in the quarterfinals just under in the fifth set with 12:15 against Torbjörn Blomdahl and came in fifth. Franz Stenzel from Austria retired after winning the group in the quarter-finals with 0: 3 sets against the Belgian Paul Stroobants . The second German participant Günter Siebert took a disappointing 15th place.

mode

In the preliminary round, the game was played in the "everyone against everyone" system for two sets of 15 points each. The first two in the group qualified for the quarter-finals. From the quarter-finals onwards, three sets of 15 points each were played. The losers in the knockout games played out places three to eight.
