The three-cushion European championship in 1935 was the second tournament in this discipline of carom and took place from March 21 to 25, 1935 in Amsterdam .
history
After the first tournament in 1932, there was a 3-year break until the UIFAB association was able to host this tournament. The political influence of the Nazi regime on sport ensured that no German player took part in this tournament (see: DABV ).
Defending champion Franz Aeberhard from Switzerland lost half of his games. With fifth place he could not build on his previous success and had to give up the title. The winner was the Frenchman Alfred Lagache , who was to win this title three more times ( 1939 , 1947 and 1949 ).
In contemporary publications, the name of the second Belgian participant is shown in different spellings: “F. Fanchamps "," F. Fauchamps "or" G. Fauchamps ”. Probably the participant of the 1930 World Cup, Guy Fauchamps. A final clarification has not yet been made. At the time, it was customary to fill in game slips by hand rather than with a typewriter and to abbreviate first names. Because of some illegible handwriting, many player names cannot be definitively clarified.
mode
“Everyone against everyone” was played with 50 points. It was the first European championship that was played with an equal number of shots .
Oddities
“Alcohol doping” was still legal back then. In the match between the Austrian Franz Engl and the Dutch Carel Koopman the score was 46:32 for Engls. The game seemed hopelessly lost for the Dutchman. In anticipation of the foreseeable end, he called the waiter and ordered a "double cognac". At that time it was still allowed to smoke and drink alcohol at tournaments. It was served, he fell down the double in one go, went to the table and scored 6 points. Engl, probably a bit puzzled, scored 0 points. Koopman, probably drawing hope, again ordered a "double" from the waiter. The audience cheered on the local hero with "Koopman, Koopman, Koopman ..." chants. He drank again, went to the table and played 6 points. Meanwhile the audience stood on the chairs, shouting "Koopman, Koopman ...". The waiter saved himself the running and came to the table with the cognac bottle. Koopman took a long swig from the bottle and played 1, 2, again 2 and then the last ball. He had 50 points and won the match. He was left behind, the confused Engl, and his serious score of 46 points.
