Bruno Nachtergaele

Bruno Leo Zulma Nachtergaele (born June 24, 1962 in Oudenaarde ) is a Belgian mathematical physicist.

Nachtergaele studied physics at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven with a licentiate degree in 1984 and received his doctorate there in 1987 in theoretical physics with Andre Verbeure ( exact results for the spin boson model , Flemish). From 1989/90 he was at the University of Chile, from 1991 to 1993 instructor at Princeton University (with Elliott Lieb ), in 1993 Assistant Professor of Physics at Princeton and from 1996 Associate Professor and from 2000 Professor of Mathematics at the University of California, Davis . From 2007 to 2010 he was head of the mathematics faculty there.

He deals mathematically with statistical mechanics of equilibrium and non-equilibrium, quantum spin systems and quantum information.

He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science . He was invited speaker at the 2002 International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing ( Derivation of the Euler-Equations from Many-Body-Quantum-Mechanics , with Horng-Tzer Yau ).

He was co-editor of various volumes of Elliott Lieb's Selecta.
