Horng-Tzer Yau

Horng-Tzer Yau (* 1959 in Taiwan ) is a Taiwanese - American mathematical physicist .

Life

Yau studied at the National Taiwan University ( Bachelor 1981) with a focus on mathematics and received his doctorate in 1987 from Princeton University with Elliott Lieb ( Stability of Coulomb Matter ). From 1988 he was at New York University , where he became professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University in 1994 . In 2003 he went to Stanford University as a professor and in 2005 to Harvard University . He was at the Institute for Advanced Study several times (1987/99, 1991/92, 2003).

Yau deals with mathematical problems in statistical mechanics and in many-particle problems and investigated, among other things, questions of the stability of matter (partly with Elliott Lieb ) with applications in astrophysics and the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates . Together with others he showed mathematically that Brownian motion can be derived microscopically from the quantum mechanical description of a (even very small, quantum mechanically described) particle in a random environment ( Schrödinger equation with randomly distributed potential).

Yau was a Sloan Research Fellow (1991-1993) and Packard Fellow (1991-1996). In 2000 he received a MacArthur Fellowship . In 2000 he received the Henri Poincaré Prize . He is a member of the Academia Sinica and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2001 he received the Morningside Gold Medal at the 2nd International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians . In 1998 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin ( Scaling limits of particle systems, incompressibel Navier-Stokes equation and Boltzmann equation ) and in Beijing in 2002 ( Derivation of the Euler equations from many body quantum mechanics , with Bruno Nachtergaele ). He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 2013 .
