The AGIPI Billard Masters 2013 was a three-cushion tournament that took place between November 23, 2012 and March 24, 2013 in Schiltigheim , France . The tournament ran in three phases: 1. Prequalification; 2. qualification; 3rd final round. Eurosport2 broadcast live on TV and Kozoom also streamed on the Internet.

The defending champion was the Swede Torbjörn Blomdahl , who, however, retired early in the group stage.

comment

Group stage

The biggest surprise was the poor performance of the defending champion and world number one Torbjörn Blomdahl from Sweden. After losing his games against Tayfun Taşdemir , Filipos Kasidokostas and Marco Zanetti in the group stage , he was eliminated unexpectedly early. The Greek overall winner from 2011 and then reigning European champion from 2012, Kasidokostas, also failed to make it into the last eight. Last year's runner-up, Kim Kyung-roul from Korea, failed because of his compatriot Cho Jae-ho (later semi-finalist) and the Spaniard Daniel Sánchez . World champion Eddy Merckx could only take 4th place. The 2011 winner and 2012 semi-finalist, Choi Sung-won from Korea, came in last.

Final round

Quarter finals

Game 1

The game between the Turk Lütfi Çenet and Cho Jae-ho was relatively even. Neither of the two was able to work out a big lead. In the end, the Korean was ahead with 6 points and won 50:44. This made him the first semi-finalist.

Game 2

The Italian Marco Zanetti , winner of the Lausanne Billiard Masters 2013 a week earlier, had to face Tayfun Taşdemir from Turkey. The three-cushion team world champion of 2003, 2004 and 2011 did not find his game and was beaten after only 26 shots and 28 points.

Game 3

In the third game you could already speak of a duel between the giants. Two multiple world champions met there. Both players had taken the crown three times. The Spaniard Daniel Sánchez in 1998, 2005 and 2010, Dick Jaspers from the Netherlands in 2000, 2004 and 2011. Jaspers didn't give the Spaniard a chance and finished the game clearly with 50:27 in just 22 shots. It was the best game of the round of four.

Game 4

In the last game, Essen's Martin Horn and Frédéric Caudron from Mons, Belgium, had a tough lot. In an interview he gave a few days earlier, he saw himself in good shape and well prepared for the tournament. Both had difficulties starting and got into the game slowly. Up to the 10th  recording both could not play more than 2 series. Then the Belgian was in his element and pulled away from the German with two series of 9s. Nothing just wanted to succeed. Almost every ball went by a margin in the end. He was then able to add another 6 series, but that was not enough, so that in the end he was clearly defeated with 31:50.

Semifinals

Game 1

The first semi-final game between Jaspers and Zanetti should be an exciting one. Both opponents fought a hard-fought game for two and a half hours. The Dutchman started the race better from the start. He steadily expanded his lead over the Bolzano player, after 14 shots he was ahead with a score of 38:12 with 26 points. Zanetti gathered his strength and played two very good recordings of 16 and 9 points. With that, the lead had melted again. At 49:49, Jaspers missed two match points. Zanetti used this chance to win 49:50 , albeit with a " fox ". The Italian was in the final of a world class tournament for the second time within a week.

Game 2

The second semi-final was played by Caudron and Cho. Both played at the usual high level, always around 2 on average. In the long run, however, Cho was unable to maintain this performance. After only 22 shots, his defeat was sealed with 32:50. He played against Jaspers for 3rd place.

3rd place match

In the game for the bronze medal, the Korean did not show enough strength to be able to compete against the three-time world champion Jaspers. The Dutchman won with 50:30 in 24 shots.

final

As on the previous Sunday, in Lausanne, Caudron and Zanetti faced each other in the final. For the organizers, it was the dream final they wanted. Both play for the in-house club BC AGIPI Courbevoie and have been series winners at the Coupe d'Europe since 2005/06 . Zanetti got off to a better start. At the early break after 10 shots he was leading with 20:18. Caudron didn't want to succeed even after the break. After a point in the first shot, he let four shots go by without winning a point before he finally scored five points in the 15th shot. Zanetti followed suit with a 7-series and extended his lead to 24:32. Caudron couldn't really catch up in the following recordings either. In the following ten shots he only played 1, 1, 5, 4 and 2 points, Zanetti was able to keep his lead with 1, 1, 2, 4, 3 and 1 point and led after 27 shots with 37:44. It just wasn't the Belgian’s day. After several shots without points, he was able to shorten it to 40:45, but Zanetti ended the tournament with a series of 5. Within a week he had scored the second tournament victory against the same opponent. It was his first win at this tournament series after winning the bronze medal in 2010 and being eliminated as a semi-finalist in 2011.

General information

The tournament mode was changed in such a way that, in contrast to previous years, only 26 instead of 28 players were invited. This resulted in a reduction of the groups from eight to six. The group size increased by one player each from four to five. A total of 72 games were played. In the qualifying rounds two tables were played at the same time, in the final round only one table.
