The three-cushion world championship 2002 took place in Randers ( Denmark ) from October 2nd to 5th . After Aalborg in 1994 , it was the second World Cup in Denmark.
history
After his final defeat in 2001 in Luxembourg against record world champion Raymond Ceulemans , Marco Zanetti won his first world title in Randers. In the final he prevailed with 3: 1 sets against the surprise finalist Dion Nelin from Denmark. Nelin, who defeated the strong Daniel Sánchez and Semih Saygıner in two matches , won the fourth World Cup medal for Denmark. The Austrian Gerhard Kostistansky made an excellent impression. After winning the group, he lost just 3-2 in the round of 16 against Spaniard Enrique Penalva. He also played the best individual average (BED) of the tournament with 3.333. For the two Germans Martin Horn and Christian Rudolph the world championship was absolutely disappointing with places 26 and 29.
mode
The tournament was played with 32 participants. In the group games, two sets of 15 points were used to win. From the round of 16 onwards there were three sets of wins per game. Third place was no longer played out.
