The 2001 three-cushion World Cup took place in Luxembourg (City) ( Luxembourg ) from October 25th to 28th . For the first time a three-cushion World Cup took place in Luxembourg.
history
Raymond Ceulemans , who had announced before the tournament that he would play his last individual World Cup, sensationally won his 21st three-cushion world championship title after 38 (!) Years. In the group stage the Dane Tonny Carsen beat him with 2-1 sets. Ceulemans took revenge in the semi-finals. After a 1: 2 set deficit he was able to win 3: 2 sets. In the final, the Italian Marco Zanetti had little chance. Ceulemans quickly led 2-0 sets and eventually won 3-1 sets. The Mexican Luis Miguel Avila caused a surprise. First he was group first in front of ex-world champion Dick Jaspers and in the quarter-finals he beat another ex-world champion with Torbjörn Blomdahl . In the end he won the second bronze medal for Mexico in three cushion after Arturo Bone (1987 in Cairo).
mode
The tournament was played with 32 participants. In the group games and in the game for third place, two sets of 15 points were played. From the round of 16 onwards there were three sets of wins per game.
