Group stage

For the first time in the history of three-cushion world championships, the tournament was not organized directly by an association, but rather by the billiards internet portal Kozoom . Kozoom has been broadcasting international billiards tournaments and regional championships in very good quality on the Internet for years and has secured the hosting of the World Championships for 2015 and 2016 in Bordeaux.

1 day

The first day started with a surprise. The current world champion Choi Sung-won lost against his compatriot Kim Jae-guen with 35:40 in 30 recordings. Another small surprise was the defeat of former world champion and wildcard player Semih Saygıner against Luis Aveiga from Ecuador in Bordeaux . The defeat of the American Pedro Piedrabuena against Erick Tellez from Costa Rica was also somewhat unexpected . Piedrabuena had played big at the last World Cup in Seoul. The German Christian Rudolph and the Austrian Arnim Kahofer survived the opening round without any major problems. Overall, the average performance in Bordeaux so far is still very disappointing. Only Eddy Leppens was able to exceed the average limit of 2 in his victory. During the first games of a tournament at the beginning of a championship, the billiards are still very slippery and therefore very difficult to play on. But that changes significantly in the course of the tournament.

2 day

After the entry of the best three-cushion athletes in the world rankings, the level improved significantly on the second day. First the world champion Choi was able to rehabilitate himself. With a very good performance he beat the Japanese Tatsuo Arai with 40:15 in 21 shots. The favorites, which include at least the ten best in the world rankings, barely showed any nakedness and won their games. The surprise losers on the first day took their last chances. This is especially true for Pedro Piedrabuena. After being behind in the whole game, he finished the game 38:32 behind with a series of eight points and still won 40:38 in 23 shots. The Dane Dion Nelin was also very strong after his opening defeat. He won against Jean Paul de Bruijn in very good 21 shots with 40:21. Both, as well as Choi, can no longer progress on their own, but are dependent on the last group games. Despite an increase in performance, the world championship for the Turkish Semih Saygıner is already over in the preliminary round. The Dutch master Jean van Erp also met this fate.

3rd day

The third day in Bordeaux brought some outstanding results, especially the game between Eddy Leppens and Sameh Sidhom. For a long time Leppens looked like the sure winner. After eight shots, Leppens was clearly in the lead 24: 4. After 13 shots the score was 28:13. Then Sidhom started a series that didn't seem to want to end. Only after 19 points did he miss another collision and take the lead with 32:28. Leppens seemed a little shocked and Sidhom won 40:35 in 22 shots. That was the highest series ever achieved in a world championship. Another highlight was the game between the Vietnamese Ma Xuan Cuong and Marco Zanetti . Ma led throughout the game. Zanetti was enough but a draw to qualify for the round of 16. After 26 shots, the Vietnamese knocked out the game. Zanetti needed seven points to draw in the follow-up. He approached the task with extreme concentration and finally achieved the seven points. The elimination from world number nine Roland Forthomme can also be seen as a surprise . Against the American Miguel Torres, he was the clear favorite despite his weak first match. Torres managed, however, not to let Forthomme come into play, finally prevailed with 40:36 in 40 shots and made it into the round of 16 of a World Cup for the first time. In Group K there was a heartbeat final in which a few points decided the qualification. In the end, the Korean Heo Jung-han won just ahead of Duong Anh Vu and Michael Nilsson. In other groups too, the decisions were very tight. Three of the top 10 in the world rankings, including world champion Choi Sung-won, have thus been eliminated. For Choi, this means a drop well below the top 12, which brings significant advantages for the players.

4th day

The knockout round started with partly expected results. Daniel Sanchez didn't have any major problems with Heo Jung-han. The same goes for his compatriot Ruben Legazpi. Kang Dong-koong won tighter, but in the end it was sure. The only result that was not necessarily to be expected was the defeat of the multiple world champion Frédéric Caudron. With a moderate performance he was defeated by the Egyptian Sameh Sidhom, where he was able to score eleven points in the follow-up, making the final score look reasonably tolerable. It looked different in the second round. Eddy Merckx delivered a brilliant game when he shot Torres 40: 8 in 12 shots from the tournament. Tayfun Taşdemir's performance was not much worse. He deservedly won against former world champion Marco Zanetti with 40:21 in 18 shots. There was a very close decision between Torbjörn Blomdahl and Cho Jae-ho. Cho, who played very well, missed a good opportunity to end the game with a score of 38:38. The experienced Swede took advantage of this and drove out to 40:38. Jaspers also won through with 40:26 in 21 shots against Tran Quyet Chien in the end.

In the quarter-finals there was a great performance by the two Spaniards. Legazpi played very well and led throughout the game. In the 21st shot he knocked out the game and it was 40:32. Then Sánchez stepped up to the follow-up and shone with a series of eight points to equalize. There was a penalty. Legazpi started with two points. Again Sánchez showed strong nerves and made one point more to 3: 2. In the other game Sidhom could not confirm his performance from the round of 16 and lost against Kang with 29:40 in 31 shots. At the end of the day, Blomdahl delivered his best performance so far in the tournament. Against Jaspers, who achieved extremely good results this year, he won 40:27 in 19 shots. The last game ended tragically for Taşdemir, who had played so well so far. The Turk dominated the whole match. It was only in the final phase that minor errors crept in. So he gave Merckx the chance to get closer again. Taşdemir had three match points, none of which he could convert. The Belgian took advantage of this brutally and won with 40:39 in 22 shots.

5th day

The first semi-final saw a deserved winner with Kang. Sánchez never found his game during the entire game and finally lost with 29:40 in 18 shots. Kang was very focused from the first recording. In the second semifinals, Merckx got off to a strong start and led to the break with 24:11. Then Blomdahl came closer and closer with medium-sized series. He turned the match and in the end won with 40:34 in 19 shots. It was Blomdahl's best tournament performance at the right time.

The final between Kang and Blomdahl was hard to beat in terms of tension. Kang started very well and continued to expand his lead. The biggest advantage was 15 points at 37:22. Now Blomdahl's vast experience came into play. He fought his way closer to Kang point by point. You could tell Kang that it was his first final at a world championship and he didn't seem as confident as at the beginning. He still managed to finish the game in 26 shots. It took Blomdahl six points to draw to force an extension. He solved this task with strong nerves. Kang started the penalty with only one collision. Blomdahl played the starting ball safely and had a difficult but not impossible position on the table. He managed to score the point and became three-cushion world champion for the fifth time. After several defeats in the final in recent years, he was able to re-enter the list of winners after 18 years.
