Pleiku (more rarely Plei Cu , Plây Cu , Plây Ku , Plei Ku ) is the capital of the Gia Lai province in the central highlands of Vietnam . The city has about 114,000 inhabitants.

Pleiku was built on volcanic ground. The city is surrounded by spruce and pine forests . The volcanic soil is very fertile. For this reason, coffee plants and rubber trees are also planted in the area around Pleiku . There are also large vineyards and their own type of wine.

Because of the military airfields in Pleiku, the city was of strategic importance during the Vietnam War . It is mainly inhabited by Bahnar and Jarai .

Pleiku is at the crossroads of important traffic routes - the road north towards Kon Tum and the trunk road to Stung Treng in Cambodia .
